SNORING AND SLEEP APNOEA

TIRED OF SNORING, OR SNORING AND TIRED? UNABLE TO COPE WITH YOUR CPAP MACHINE ?

Snoring occurs when air does not flow smoothly through the air passages, or when the soft tissues or muscles in the throat vibrate during sleep. Snoring can severely impact one’s quality of life. Feilding Dental Centre may be able to help, by providing a custom made oral appliance (OA) – to help you (and your family !) get the rest and refreshing sleep we all need.

Snoring may also be associated with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) – a more serious condition that can have links with hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even increased risk of motor vehicle accidents.

Take the STOP-bang test below, to see if you may be suffering from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

Do you (or your partner) display any of the following symptoms:Snore loudly when sleeping

Tired during the day

Observed to stop breathing while asleep

suffer from hyPertension

Or any of these risk factors:

Bmi over 31

Aged over 50

Neck circumference over 40cm

Gender male

If you have been medically diagnosed with OSA and are struggling with CPAP use, the evidence shows that OA compliance is higher due to better OA tolerance.

Our OA is comprised of two separate sliding appliances (each like a thin mouthguard) that cover upper and lower teeth. This combination holds the jaw forward to open the blocked airway passage, thereby reducing snoring. As the OA rests on teeth, these and the gums, must be healthy before commencing treatment.

Frederik Dean at Feilding Dental Centre, is pleased to offer this OSA or snoring treatment service to patients. For OSA patients all you need is a referral from your GP with a sleep disordered breathing diagnosis, and a healthy mouth.

Suspected OSA patients may require a GP referral and / or a home sleep test. We are also able to arrange a home sleep test for you, that will advise if you suffer from OSA. Snorers only do not need a medical referral, but may require a sleep test if OSA is suspected. If you are a CPAP user (or struggler) and already have a written diagnosis if OSA, nothing else is likely needed.

When you are ready, contact our team to book your consultation, and start the process to waking up refreshed.
